Types of Wood Fence

What's the best wood fence style for you?

  • 1) Standard Side-by-Side Privacy Wood Fence

Construction: The Standard Side-by-Side Privacy style of wood fence is constructed with treated wood or galvinized metal posts typically set 24" deep in concrete and approximately 8' apart.  Posts typically extend to 2" below the top of the fence. Treated 2x4 runners are then secured to said posts, and pickets are attached to the 2x4s with with galvanized ring shank nails.  Standard privacy wood fences have a "finished side"  (with smooth fence pickets) and a "rough" side (with visible 2x4 runners).

Style: Our standard picket is the "Dog Ear" picket, which has the top corners of the board docked. However, other styles of pickets can be special ordered.

Height: The standard wood privacy fence is 6' tall but can be constructed in a range from 4' to 10' tall depending on your local requirements.

  • 2) Board-on-Board Total Privacy Wood Fence

Construction: The Board-on-Board Total Privacy style of wood fence is constructed similarly to the standard side-by-side privacy fence in that they are also with treated wood or galvinized metal posts typically set 24" deep in concrete and approximately 8' apart.  Posts typically extend to 2" below the top of the fence. Treated 2x4 runners are then secured to said posts, and pickets are attached to the 2x4s with with galvanized ring shank nails. Then, an approximately a 2" spacing is left between each picket, and another row of pickets are then attached on top of those to cover the gap. Board-on-Board Total Privacy wood fences have a "finished side"  (with smooth fence pickets) and a "rough" side (with visible 2x4 runners).

Style: Our standard picket is the "Dog Ear" picket, which has the top corners of the board docked. However, other styles of pickets can be special ordered.

Height: The standard wood privacy fence is 6' tall but can be constructed in a range from 4' to 10' tall depending on your local requirements.

  • 3) Shadowbox Wood Fence

Construction: The Shadow Box style of wood fence is constructed similarly to the standard side-by-side privacy fence in that they are also constructed with treated wood or galvinized metal posts typically set 24" deep in concrete and approximately 8' apart.  Posts typically extend to 2" below the top of the fence. Treated 2x4 runners are then secured to said posts, and pickets are attached to the 2x4s with with galvanized ring shank nails. The difference with the shadow box fence style is that the pickets are spaced approximately 2" apart and the opposite side of the fence has the pickets positioned to conceal that 2" gap. The shadow box style is an attractive option for some due to this mirrored effect. Shadow box style fences do take additional time to build properly due to each picket being adjusted so that the gaps are consistent and each picket is level and plumb to provide for a clean and uniform appearance.

Style: Our standard picket is the "Dog Ear" picket, which has the top corners of the board docked. However, other styles of pickets can be special ordered.

Height: The standard wood privacy fence is 6' tall but can be constructed in a range from 4' to 10' tall depending on your local requirements.

  • 4) Spaced Picket Wood Fence

The spaced picket style is an attractive option for some due to the ability to see beyond them, while keeping pets or small children safe.

Construction: The Spaced Picket style of wood fence is constructed similarly to the standard side-by-side privacy fence in that they are also constructed with treated wood or galvinized metal posts typically set 24" deep in concrete and approximately 8' apart.  Posts typically extend to 2" below the top of the fence. Treated 2x4 runners are then secured to said posts, and pickets are attached to the 2x4s with with galvanized ring shank nails. • 5) Ranch Rail Wood Fence

Ranch rail fences are commonly seen on ranches, but are becomming a common residentail style also.

Construction: The Ranch Rail style of wood fence is constructed with treated wood posts typically set 24" deep in concrete and approximately 8' apart.  Treated 2x6 runners are then secured horizontally to said posts with galvanized ring shank nails.

Style: There are many options of ranch rail fences, but typically they come in 2, 3, or 4 rail. Top caps (a flat board run on top of the posts) are a common personilaztion for ranch rail fences. Also common is the addition of wire mesh to the fence to keep pets inside the fence while still getting the aesthetic of the ranch rail.

Height: The standard ranch rail fence is approximately 4' tall but can be constructed in a range from 3' to 8' tall depending on your local requirements.

  • 6) Horizontal Wood Privacy Fence

Horizontal privacy fences are becoming more popular and provide a great alternative to the "cookie cutter" standard side-by-side wood privacy fence.

Construction: Horizontal privacy fences are constructed with treated wood or metal posts typically set 24" deep in concrete  that span the entire height of the fence. Horizontal privacy fences are more challenging to build due to the propensity of lumber to warp. To counteract this, horizontal wood fences require reduced post spacing at approximately 5' intervals. Horizontal privacy fences are best installed in relatively flat yards, or yards that have a gradual and consistent slope. Be aware that a horizontal privacy fence may not to fit into yards that have a large amount of elevation change or uneven terrain.

Style: Horizontal privacy fences can be constructed with or without gaps between the boards.

Height: Horizontal privacy fences can be constructed in pretty much any height allowed by local municipalities.
